Woodstock 2 Essay, Research Paper

The largest rock concert ever was comeing to town. Threedays not hours of music. Threedays not hours of music. Campingout under the stas. This was going to be a serious party.Woodstock was the greatest rock concert ever to take place in the United States.

Four very different very young people sponsered Woodstock. The youngest was only twenty-six. Micheal Lang, Artie Kornfield, John Roberts, and Joel Roseman. The original idea was to promote a rcording studio. To promote the idea they would have a concert. After a search for a big enough space they rented a field from a local dairy farmer.

Upsate New York was ready. The city, the country, and the state officials knew what to expectand felt confident the could handle traffic, crowd control, sanitation, medical emergencies and unexpected problems.

Woodstock Rock Festival took place near Woodstock, New York, on August 15, 16,and17, 1969. Woodstock became a sybol of the 1960’s counterculture and a milestone in rock history. Among those attending were members of the counterculture, who were often referred to a hippies, and chaarcteristically rejected authority, prtested the Vietnam War, supported the Civil Rights movement, dressed unconventionally, and experimented with sex and illegal drugs.

Woodstock Music and Arts fair drew more than 500,000 people. For three days the site became a counterculture mini-nation where mind were open, drugs were all but legal, and love was free.

During the monumental three days some of th greatest musician prefromed including singers: Janis Joplin, Ravi Shanker, Arlo Gunthie, and Joan Baez as well as the bands: The who, Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young, Jefferson Airplane, the Greatful dead, and Creedence Clearwater Revival. Jimi Hendrix ended the event with a solo guitar preformance of the “Star Spangled Banner”.

On the negitive side, according to police reports there were only three death (but there was also three births). On the positive side 500,000 young citizens were left on their own to discover the word sharing, helping, consideration, and respect to be very powereful. Thousands left woodstock with a totally different look on life.

The fesival did cause some inconveniences to the surrounding niehgborhoods. Yet the concert was peaceful.

Everyday the Woodstock site recieves visitors from throughout the country. There are no signs, no admission just a side road off a small highway. Nothing special to se just a huge plot of land that used to be a dairy farm in 1969. The cars pull up; the cameras click, people from all walks off life stroll through and remember. Everday, every year the same scene is repeated.
