- Wang Lung: Wang Lung is a farmer who is at first very humble and content in his home then later becomes a proud, wealthy man who is always troubled in his home. In the beginning of the story he seems happy living as a farmer though at times he feels as though he is nothing to the merchants in the town.
- Have you ever wondered “who is the farmer they call Wang Lung?” Wang Lung is a poor farmer who begins with one piece of land that he farms each day. As he grow as a character in the novel he goes from poor to rich. In the novel The Good Earth the main character Wang Lung shows several qualities that helps him grow as a character.
- I remember when I was at the bookstore and saw how thick of a book it was I thought to myself, “Great…here’s another long boring book.” But after reading it I eventually proved myself wrong and found out it was well worth reading it all the way through the last page.
- Earth/ Land/ Field: Wang Lung’s love for the earth is a chief driving force in his life. The only thing he loves with any constancy is the earth, and this is because the earth is constant as well. Unlike food or silver, the earth is something that can never be taken away from him.
