- Visual representation of reality, as seen through mass media, is acknowledged by sociologists to be influential in shaping people’s views of the world. Our everyday realities are articulated mostly by what we see in the media. The role of advertising in this interpretation of reality is crucial.
- Desirable behavior is sought by people throughout the world based on how one is brought up and the expectations one is bombarded with on a daily basis. When people begin to form certain expectations in life there begin to be formed stereotypes. It is from here that advertising finds its most potent weapons.
- By doing a textual and feminist analysis, the specific issue we examined in our study is how women’s characters are portrayed in soap operas, specifically Days of Our Lives, and how their behavior is affected by the patriarchal system. The feminist and textual analysis were done through the viewing of Days of Our Lives on three consecutive Fridays.
- Women grapple with their perception of a ideal body because of society s imposed ideals. Goffman analyzes advertisements according to gender stereotypes of men and women. He addresses these issues in a slide show containing advertisements of women in which the body images are unattainable.

Nearly 13 million US citizens are alcoholics and ten percent of all deaths in the United States are alcohol-related (Kilbourne,2).
