- Euthanasia and physician assisted suicide (PAS) have been more widely accepted in the last decade of the 1900?s then any prior. - The issue of physician-assisted suicide has come to be one of the most controversial legal issues in recent history. In my opinion I think that the law is designed to lay out guidelines for the social conduct of individuals in society. Yet, within this definition there are extremes on both ends of the spectrum in which the law encompasses.
- One of the most hotly debated topics going on now is the one concerning the ethics of assisted suicide and euthanasia. - Physician-assisted suicide is the provision by a doctor, consciously and legally, to a patient who has competently requested it, of the means for that patient to end his or her own life (McCuen 10). - Physician-assisted suicide should be a legal option for terminally ill patients, that is my beleif. A perfect example of this statement is the case of forty-one year-old Peter Cinque who was in the terminal stages of diabetes several years ago. He was blind, had lost both legs, and suffered from ulcers and cardiovascular problems, as well.
- Walking through the corridors of any hospital would show one several things. There would be people healing, hurting, dying, and coping with all sorts of problems. Even though some of them may share the same misfortunes, they are separated into two categories: those who are still fighting for their lives and those who have given up.
- Questions concerning the right to end one’s life have long generated storms of controversy. These questions, involving intensely personal views on issues no less profound than the meaning of life and liberty, are unlikely to disappear any time soon. The conservative nature of the medical profession, and the organized opposition of the “right to life” movement, along with disagreement among disabilities rights organizations, perpetuate the controversy.
- Physician-assisted suicide happens when a person commits suicide with the help of a physician. A physician supplies information and the means of committing suicide to a person so that they can easily terminate their own life. The physicians do this either by a prescription for lethal dose of sleeping pills or a supply of carbon monoxide gas.

They feel that their only hope is to kill themselves. Other people in the world feel that euthanasia and assisted suicide are morally wrong.
- Physician assisted suicide is immoral in the case of people who are alive and desire to terminate their life. However, there are extreme cases when hastening the dying process is justified in the circumstances of individuals who are in intense physical impairment.
- How could someone wake up every day sick, in constant pain and feeling horrible every minute of existence? This is not a good way to live from anybodies point of view. The time may come when suffering, just is not worth living. In instances such as this, taking ones own life maybe the only relief from pain.
- Euthanasia by definition means “a gentle and easy death”, “the good death of another” or “mercy killing.”( ) There are two types of euthanasia currently recognized, active and passive euthanasia.
- Perhaps the most famous such case is that of the philosopher Socrates, who was required to drink hemlock to end his life in 399 BC, after being found guilty of corrupting the youth of Athens. In the 0th century the German general Erwin Rommel took poison rather than be executed for his role in a plot to oust Adolf Hitler from office.
- The issue of whether doctors should be allowed to assist patients in suicide has been a very sensitive and emotional topic for people of both sides. With machines to substitute organs and blood, there is no doubt technology have saved and prolonged many lives.
