- Sister Helen did not wear her habit during the course of the film. Many people have a stereotypical vision of Catholic nuns: the habit, seemingly out-of-touch thoughts and ideals, and older and/or without any vitality.
- Dead Man Walking is a great book that deals with one of our nations most controversial issues: capital punishment. The books narrator, Sister Helen Prejean, discusses her personal views on capital punishment. She was a spiritual advisor and friend to two death row inmates; Elmo Patrick Sonnier and Robert Lee Willie.
- I believe that the movie Dead Man Walking impacted my life greatly. It was a very emotional and moving movie. This was an excellent movie because it portrayed the feelings of both the families of the victims and the murder himself. It shows how much pain and suffering the families had to go through with all the sadness and hatred against Matthew Poncelant.
- Imagine yourself convicted for a crime and sentenced to death. Imagine the hate in the society towards you. What kind of a soul would you have? How would you feel about the thought knowing when you are going to die and in what way? How will you react? Who will help you out? In the novel Dead Man Walking, Sister Helen Prejean, was asked to correspond with Pat Sonnier, a man sentenced to die by electric chair for the murder of two teen-agers, which he did not commit.
- ‘I know that it is not a question of malice or ill will or meanness of spirit that prompts our citizens to support executions. It is quite simply that people don’t know the truth about what is really going on’ (p. 197). This passage, found in the book “Dead Man Walking”, written by Sister Helen Prejean, speaks directly about the theme of this book: the morality of Capital Punishment.
- I have taken a most hesitated step from my world of serene tranquility to one of complete judgment and sin. I transgressed away from the petty feelings of unwarranted hate and suspended myself within the realms of cold-hearted, revengeful disgust. I left behind my familiar world and suspiciously entered the broken life of Matthew Poncelat.
- The parents of the victim ?Hope? were filled with revenge because of what Matthew did, not why he did it. The father of the victim ?Walter? was very sympathetic, he understanding of what Matthew was going through.
- His death was certain, for they all had told him. He knew his doom and the incurable pain of the world gone mad. He had visited the church and the ones in robes said he was damned by whatever gods they prayed to. He had studied at the academy in an attempt to find answers to his affliction, but found only the stench of scholarly bull-shit.
- While Last Dance isn’t strictly a gender-switched re-telling of Dead Man Walking, there are a number of obvious similarities. In this film, the death row inmate is Cindy Liggett (Sharon Stone), a woman tried and convicted for the brutal beating deaths of two high school kids.
- The film Dead Man Walking, which is directed by Tim Robbins, is a film about redemption. Susan Sarandon plays a Nun called Sister Helen Prejean. She is asked by a convicted murderer to get him a lawyer and then later is asked to be his spiritual advisor.
- In the book, Dead Men Do Tell Tales, by William R. Maples, Ph.D. and Michael Browning, a story is told in how the dead, no matter how dead, still “talk” to us. The book is appropriately titled because, according to Dr. Maples, truth is discoverable, truth wants to be discovered (2).
- “Dead man walking!” This sound rings through each and every death row inmate a thousand times a day; but should it? Capital punishment is one of the most controversial topics among Americans today. The most severe of all sentences: that of death. Also known as the death penalty, capital punishment this is the most severe form of corporal punishment as it is requires law enforcement officers to kill the offender.
- Chapter 1-4 Question 1-31. Sr. Prejean originally goes to see Pat Sonnier because Chara Colen from thePrison Coalition asked her to become a pen pal to a death row inmate. She continues to write then eventually goes to see him because she senses an essential humanness in him, and weight of his loneliness and abandonment, draws her to him.
- Although most people may not want to believe it, there have been a number of innocent people killed by the death penalty. And with the public not being able to witness executions, how do we as a society get the message out in hopes of deterring people away from crime?
- Susan Sarandon, who starred in a film about capital punishment called Dead Man Walking, had an interesting conversation with her daughter about the film. Sarandon was explaining to her young daughter how capital punishment works: First Billy kills Steve, then the government kills Billy, to punish him for killing Steve.
- I. Roosevelt Collins, a black man in Alabama, was convicted of rape, sentenced to death, and executed in 1937. Roosevelt testified that the ?victim? who was white had consented to sex, which caused a near-riot in the courtroom. The all-white jury deliberated for only FOUR minutes.
- Aaron Brown 9th gradeDEAD MANS CREEK As the bell rang all students rushed out of their classrooms and into the cafeteria. ” I hate Mr. Grogsworth. He always gives us way to much homework.” Julio remarked.” Did you hear the way Julia was arguing for more homework? It was sick.
- The film Dead Man Walking successfully uses a variety of effective imagery techniques to draw powerful emotions from its viewers. Much of the films success is due to the director Tim Robbins as well as the cast. Before seeing the film Dead Man Walking, I never looked at the actual people involved in the process of capital punishment.
- When we think about capital punishment, we think of the criminal, but do we take the time to think about the family of that criminal. Because one person caused grief for a family we must turn around and cause grief for another. And what about the money we spend to take these lives away.
- Herein lies one of the greatest challenges facing the Black world in the 1st century: how do we combat the dominant public image of young Black men that has largely been produced by mass media? Tupac Shakur’s life and death is a microcosm of the larger picture.
