- Between the settlement at Jamestown in 1607 and the Treaty of Paris in 1763, the most important change that occurred in the colonies was the extension of British ideals far beyond the practice in England itself. Changes in religion, economics, politics and social structures illustrate this Americanization of the transplanted Europeans.
- Beginning in 1763 with the Proclamation of that year, Americans began to feel that a revolution would be justified if the Crown crossed the line and violated the rights that all men should have. England showed many examples of poor judgment in their management of the colonies that resulted in the citizens of America feeling that these rights were being oppressed and even denied.
- Like any other great event in history, there was much more to the Revolutionary War than is seen on the surface. It is true that the war was fought for intellectual freedoms, as well as political and economical freedoms. However, the mere ideas of free intellect and politics and economics could not have grown into a nation-wide motive for war without gossips, rumor mills, pamphlets, or boycotts.

The colonists were very content with their lives until the implementation of heavy taxation and oppressive measures by the English government as well as many English companies, such as the East India Company.
- From the end of the French and Indian War, there was a sense of unity brewing among the colonies. The colonies had to unite in order to overcome a common foe as expressed in the Albany Plan of Union that called a combined effort of defense throughout the colonies.

Developments come as fast as time passes, and with each new one, the old one becomes obsolete. Scientists and engineers have made a worldwide impact on how civilization lives, works and plays, and the technology continues to grow through continual research and experimentation.

However, unlike many historians, CLR James in his work, The Black Jacobins, does not depict the struggle for independence as merely a slave revolt which happened to come after the French Revolution.

It occurred in the second half of the 18th century, in an “Age of Democratic Revolution,” when philosophers and political theorists in Europe were critically examining the institutions of their own societies and the notions that lay behind them.

Although his historical account tends to be incomplete at times and a few misconceptions are evident, he touches on the many important points in New Jersey history, pointing out that, by observing how this state has dealt with her divisions is instructive, “for it demonstrates on a small scale how Americans have dealt with alarming social conflicts.
