- The system of democracy practised by ancient Athens was a much better system of democracy than that of Canada. The Athenian system was more fair, a great deal more democratic, and directly affected ones life. The Canadian system of democracy falls short of fairness is a great deal less democratic, and it is hard to pick out the specific details that directly affect ones life.
- I awoke to the soft trickling of water outside my window. It took me a moment to realize that it is raining again; the tranquil sound of water dripping from the birch was as sweet as the silver bells ringing at Christmas. It was only six in the morning, but more than willingly I got up, put on a robe and opened my window.
- Some say he was absent-minded or even oblivious, but I rather like to think of it as frequent states of profound thought. The man I refer to is Adam Smith and after having read the assigned excerpts and a few other passages from his The Theory of Moral Sentiments and An Inquiry into the Nature and Causes of the Wealth of Nations I not only hold him in a new light, but I have arrived at three heavily debated conclusions.
- Adam Smith was born in 1723 in Kirkcaldy, Fife, Scotland, fatherless. The exact date of his birth is unknown. Smith was baptized June 5, 1723. At the age of fifteen, he began his schooling at Glasgow and Oxford. In 1751, after he finished school, he was offered a job at Glasgow University where he became the new Professor of Logic.
- Traits. The song presents cultural traits in that it shows how we grow up and are affected by culture. Cultural traits presented in this song are how we teach children and what we subject them to. Our methods of education and entertainment both affect how we turn out in the long run.
- Autumn, in a deeper sense, is a magnificent ending to an era. Although all the leaves fall and the sun fails to shine for as long each day as it did during the summer, the death of the cycle of the living seasons is spectacular. It brings vibrant color, tolerable weather, and the promise that it will return again in the spring.
- Adam Smith grew up in Scotland, which is home to David Hume, who is perhaps one of England s greatest philosophers. Smith had a good childhood, he was raised with some money at hand, but he was certainly not rich. As far as his family goes, his father was a lawyer and held a public office in Scotland and his mother was a member of the Scottish Gentry.
- Already known for his scholarly achievements, well educated although a self-taught graduate of Oxford, and his absentminded persona, his first book The Theory of Moral Sentiments greatly increased his notoriety.
- Technology advances with time. Though, technological advancement is needed to move a civilization forward, it also has its downsides. With more products and services available, it is impossible to live a life of relaxation as people once did long before.
- Athena the goddess of wisdom, war, and useful arts, and the helper of heroes and inspiration for soldiers. She was the daughter of Zeus and the protector of cities and states. She was never easy to anger, she believed using wisdom was better to settle differences than fighting.
- World War II was the most costly and the most deadly war towards Americans in its short existence. The plan was for the allies, the united States , France, Russia, and Britain to defeat Germany and then defeat the empire of Japan. After the defeat of Germany it was crucial for the Americans to end the war quickly because if the Soviet Union enterd the war against Japan and learned about the secrets of the atomic bomb it too could become a world power and dominate as Germany tried to do.
- When a neutron strikes the nucleus of an atom of the isotopes uranium 235 or plutonium-239, it causes that nucleus to split into two fragments, each of which is a nucleus with about half the protons and neutrons of the original nucleus. In the process of splitting, a great amount of thermal energy, as well as gamma rays and two or more neutrons, is released.
- Adam Smith was born in 1723. The age of humanism and reason, in other words the age of greed and corruption associated with dreadful living conditions. At the age of about fifteen, Smith proceeded to Glasgow University, studying moral philosophy under Francis Hutcheson.
- In 1751 he became a professor at Glasgow. There he wrote The Theory of Moral Sentiment in 1759. This philosophical work gained Smith an appointment in 1764 as tutor of the young duke of Buccleuch. The tutoring took Smith to France, where he started writing The Wealth of Nations in 1776.
- Spiritual/Metaphysical/Philosophical Level- The inability to love by the General causes him to become a tyrant and unable to understand, respect, or appreciate the lives of others. Desperately trying to control one’s life leads to an even greater lack of control.
- In the earlier days of recorded history, nations traded to obtain more goods, especially those they couldn’t produce themselves, which seems like a logical enough motive. But by the 17th century, this motive for trade gradually eroded. The desire for goods was replaced by the desire to accumulate gold instead.
- The United States’ decision to drop the atomic bomb was intended to intimidate and keep the Soviet Union from invading Japan, but was also to end the war. Even without the atomic bomb, the Japanese empire would have collapsed. The United States, however, did not want to let the Soviet Union enter the war and invade Japan in order to spread communism.
- A Democracy is defined as a government of, by and for the people. Originally, democracy meant rule by the common people. In this sense, and even before the beginning of modern class society, it was very much a class affair. It meant that power should be in the hands of the largest class: the poorest, least educated and the propertyless.
- It seems you either love him or hate him – but there’s no avoiding him. Adam Sandler has risen to the top, and he has his loyal fans to thank for it. While most actors fight their way to the top while relying mainly on hype, for Sandler this was actually against him.
- Adam Smith’s theory makes a strong argument for the assertion that a free market will provide overall good for society, but, as de Tocqueville points out, it provides little or no protection for the poor.
